I look at a lot of colleges as writing research. One thing I've seen becoming more common is a catchall department for, yes, gender and sexuality studies. The best of these have subtracks.
Your intro course, you pick one of: Introduction to Feminism and Women's Studies Introduction to Human Sexuality and Gender Introduction to Masculine Studies Introduction to Queer Studies
Then the later classes have topics on feminism, modern manhood/fatherhood, gender identity, transfolk, gays, lesbians, queer history, famous women, and so on. You can stick with one track or mix and match.
In such a department, it'd make sense to have male head, but more if he was a gay man or a transman than a straight man. Even a straight man can be a feminist though.
Your guy sounds like a bad fit, but hardly a surprise. Alas!
On the bright side, if you just want to use the class for paperwork, there are lots of gender and feminist resources online now.
